Report of kayakers in difficulty – 20th August 2013

The Irish Coast Guard received a report today of three kayakers in difficulty off the coast of Skerries. It appeared to a person ashore that one or more of the group had capsized and were having difficulty righting their craft. The Skerries Coast Guard Unit were tasked to assist with the rescue. The Coast Guard also requested the launch of the Skerries Lifeboat.

The Coast Guard issued a PAN PAN alert over VHF radio for any vessels in the area to assist. Fortunately, a private vessel was nearby and quickly assisted with recovering the three kayakers safely to shore.

Joint Exercise at Clogherhead CG & Incidents – 14th August 2013

This evening, members of the Skerries Coast Guard team accepted an invitation from their neighbouring station of Clogherhead Coast Guard to attend a joint training exercise at Clogherhead.

During this exercise, the Clogherhead CG team were tasked to assist with a casualty injured on a headland near the station. Members of the Skerries Coast Guard team assisted Clogherhead CG with the successful extraction and treatment of the casualty.

Meanwhile, shortly before 22:00 the remaining Skerries Coast Guard team back at the Skerries CG base were paged to investigate reports of red flares sighted North of Balbriggan. The team conducted a coastline search of the area with nothing to report. Both the Skerries and Clogherhead lifeboats were also tasked to investigate the flare reports. No further action was required and the team returned to base.

Joint training exercise with Clogherhead Coast Guard

This evening the Skerries team were joined by the Clogherhead Coast Guard team for a training exercise. The exercise took place at the Drumanagh Headland, south of Loughshinny village and involved a missing persons scenario.

The exercise was completed successfully and enjoyably, with all teams locating their “missing persons” and providing appropriate medical treatment and extraction techniques.

The Skerries Coast Guard team will shortly be paying a return visit to Clogherhead for another joint exercise in the near future.

Loughshinny

Rescue at Loughshinny – 14th July 2013

The Skerries Coast Guard team were paged to attend a serious incident involving an injured casualty near Loughshinny. Several units of Dublin Fire Brigade, Gardai and the Ambulance Services were also tasked to the scene to assist with the rescue. The Coast Guard’s Sikorsky helicopter was dispatched from its base at Dublin Airport.

The casualty was treated at the scene by the various services, then secured in a stretcher and winched aboard the Coast Guard’s Sikorsly helicopter for trasnfer to hospital. An Advanced Paramedic from the ambulance service was also winched aboard the helicopter to travel with the casualty.  A highline was used for the winches.
