Marine Notice 14 of 2012

The Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport have issued marine notice #14 of 2012, advising of forthcoming offshore construction operations on the East-West Interconnector Project.

From 1st April 2012 and continuing for a period of up to three weeks, the vessel Kingdom of Fife will be undertaking Pre-Lay Grapnel Runs (PLGR) along a 105km section of the interconnector route, between Rush, North Co Dublin and the Welsh coast. The vessel will be towing a grapnel rig up to 150 metres astern and should be given a wide berth by other vessels. Operations will be carried out on a 24hour basis and the vessel will display the appropriate day shapes and lights as required.

St Patricks day parade 2012

This year members of the Skerries Coast Guard marched in their local St Patrick’s day parade in Skerries.  The team’s 4WD Coast Guard emergency vehicle also took part, with its sirens and blue lights adding some excitment to the event.The weather proved fortunate, with the rain showers clearing before the parade began. As always, the crowds lining the parade route through the town were cheering and encouraging the team on.

The Dublin based Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 116, also dropped by, providing a dramatic aerobatical display as the parade began.

Remember – if you spot someone in difficulty at sea or along the coast, even if you only think they could be in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the COAST GUARD. Your call could save their life.

Water safety talk with Balbriggan Order of Malta

This evening, the Skerries Coast Guard team visited their local Order of Malta station at Hampton Street, Balbriggan to deliver a water safety talk to the unit’s cadets. The Order of Malta cadets are aged between 10 and 16 years and are part of the Ambulance Corp.

This highly interactive safety talk focused on lifejackets, in particular the importance of wearing them correctly and how they save lives. The cadets also learned what actions to take to safely help someone in difficulty in the water and most importantly how to raise the alarm.

During the evening, the enthusiastic cadets also had the opportunity to try on the various lifejackets and water safety equipment used by Coast Guard volunteers when they are operating near water.

Overall, the evening was very enjoyable for the cadets, with plenty of questions asked both about water safety and the Coast Guard. This water safety talk is part of a series of safety initiatives the cadets are taking part in for their Order of Malta Achievement Programme.

Land search training at Ardgillan

This morning, the Skerries Coast Guard team took part in a large scale missing person search exercise in the vast grounds of Ardgillan Demesne, 3 miles North of Skerries. The exercise was centred on the scenario of two persons reported missing in the park, with several hours passed since they were last sighted.

The various search teams were briefed and dispatched to search the large area of mixed woodlands and grasslands, each dissected by various tracks and trails.

The exercise proved very beneficial and the search teams successfully located their various clues and targets. The training scenario then moved on to cover emergency medical treatment of the “casualties”, stretcher extraction from the dense woodland and preparation of a helicopter landing site on nearby grassland.

The Skerries team have previously assisted Gardai with several missing person searches involving woodland and grassland areas and this exercise proved a useful opportunity of testing and refreshing the skills involved.
