Shortly after 19:00 the Skerries Coast Guard team were tasked to assist Gardai at Portrane beach. Swords Gardai had received public reports of an adult male possibly requiring assistance in the area of Portrane beach.
A thorough search of the area was carried out with nothing unusual found. The Dublin based Coast Guard helicopter, R116, also carried out an infra-red search of the area.
No further public sightings were reported and all search teams were stood down.
Incident # 4 of 2013
Today, several national newspapers ran the heartwarming story of Skerries Coast Guard’s Gary Creighton rescuing local dog Hector. Hector a mixed border collie had choked on his tennis ball while out with his owner Colette on Rush South Beach. Fortunately Skerries Coast Guard Cardiac Responder Gary was nearby and used his medical training, plus a lot of quick thinking, and started CPR, saving poor Hector from the jaws of death.
The article featured in the Irish Independent, Irish Daily Mirror, Irish Daily Star and The
Sun. Several national radio shows also picked up on the happy ending, with Gary and Colette interviewed live on Hector’s morning show on 2FM, John Murray’s RTE Radio 1 show and also Spin 103.8fm.
Well done to Gary from all of the team at Skerries Coast Guard.
From sunrise this morning, the Skerries Coast Guard team carried out an extensive low tide shoreline search for a missing person, Paul Byrne. The Dublin Civil Defence also carried out extensive searches of the Rogerstown area and nearby rough ground. Unfortunately nothing was found during this searches.
Paul Byrne (aged 24) was last seen at approximately 3am on the 25th December 2012 in the Sandy Lane area of Rush. Paul is described as 5′ 5″ in height, of thin build with blue eyes and short light brown hair. The search also extended into the nearby areas of Portrane and Loughshinny.

The Skerries Coast Guard team were paged just before 6:30 this morning to assist in a single vehicle accident north of Skerries. A vehicle appeared to have skidded on ice at a bend near Barnageera, about two miles north of Skerries and left the road, descending a sheer grassy cliff and landing overturned on the rocky beach below. The Coast Guard helicopter was also tasked to the scene.
Several units of the Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and successfully extracted the driver from the vehicle. There were no other occupants of the vehicle. Fortunately the driver did not suffer any life threatening injuries.
Road conditions in the Fingal area are treacherous today and road users should take extreme care. Further sub zero temperatures are forcasted for the coming nights.
