Report of distress flares off Rush – 20th January 2014

Shortly after darkness this evening, the Skerries Coast Guard team were tasked to investigate a report of possible distress flares off the Rush coast, three miles south of Skerries. The Coast Guard’s National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC) had received a report from a vigilant member of the public who had sighted two parachute flares deployed off the Rush coast.

The Skerries Coast Guard team arrived on scene within minutes and immediately began to carry out a detailed search of the coastline. The Coast Guard’s helicopter based at Dublin, Rescue 116 was also tasked and carried out an extensive search of the sea area. Nothing further was spotted and with the area thoroughly searched no further action was required.

Remember – if you spot someone in difficulty on the coast, even if you only think they may be in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the COAST GUARD. Do not assume someone else has made the call.

Rescue at Loughshinny – 14th July 2013

The Skerries Coast Guard team were paged to attend a serious incident involving an injured casualty near Loughshinny. Several units of Dublin Fire Brigade, Gardai and the Ambulance Services were also tasked to the scene to assist with the rescue. The Coast Guard’s Sikorsky helicopter was dispatched from its base at Dublin Airport.

The casualty was treated at the scene by the various services, then secured in a stretcher and winched aboard the Coast Guard’s Sikorsly helicopter for trasnfer to hospital. An Advanced Paramedic from the ambulance service was also winched aboard the helicopter to travel with the casualty.  A highline was used for the winches.

Missing person search – Rush 16th February 2013

From sunrise this morning, the Skerries Coast Guard team carried out an extensive low tide shoreline search for a missing person, Paul Byrne.  The Dublin Civil Defence also carried out extensive searches of the Rogerstown area and nearby rough ground. Unfortunately nothing was found during this searches.

Paul Byrne (aged 24) was last seen at approximately 3am on the 25th December 2012 in the Sandy Lane area of Rush. Paul is described as 5′ 5″ in height, of thin build with blue eyes and short light brown hair. The search also extended into the nearby areas of Portrane and Loughshinny.

Search for missing person – December 2012

The Skerries Coast Guard team have been assisting Balbriggan Gardai since late December 2012 in the search for Paul Byrne, who was reported missing from the Rush, Co Dublin area. Paul Byrne (aged 24) was last seen at approximately 3am on the 25th December 2012 in the Sandy Lane area of Rush. Paul is described as 5′ 5″ in height, of thin build with blue eyes and short light brown hair. Further details are available from the Garda.ie website.

The Skerries Coast Guard team have carried out regular extensive low tide searches of the Rogerstown and Rush coastline area since late December, unfortunately with nothing to report. This coastal search is ongoing with further low tide searches planned for the coming days.

The Gardai have appealed for anyone who may be able to assist in locating Paul to contact Balbriggan Garda station at 01 8020510, the Garda confidential line 1800 666 111 or at any Garda station.
